I made a powerpoint of why I’m mad about the Korra pull. I understand it’s not cancelled (thank god), but I’m still upset.

please nickelodeon

It’s so sad. I think Spongebob was Nick’s best show until it hit it’s peak in 2004, ironically the year before A:TLA came around to take it’s place. These days it’s absolute turd, and yet Nick gives it so much attention because it gets views, ratings, and money from dumb, impressionable children. LoK might not be the greatest animated series around, but it was still easily the best show on that network (similarly “problematic but good” shows like TMNT and Kung Fu Panda followed behind). Spongebob, like Fairly Odd Parents, deserves to die and rot in TV Hell.

This made me realise that Nickelodeon probably just got booted one of their few-or maybe even only-handicapped characters off their TV network before we even got the chance to really learn more about her.

That’s not problematic AT ALL (in addition to the other shitty things that all of this implies).

Probably only handicapped character who isn’t the butt of a joke (apparently there’s at least one show that has a character who may or not have a disability who’s often made to be the butt of some joke).

But yeah.

oh my god do you really THINK nickelodeon booted the show because they don’t want handicapped people on the air

THINK CRITICALLY ABOUT THIS.  THINK ABOUT HOW TUMBLR WAS AT THE END OF THE FIRST SEASON OF KORRA.

LOK really fucked up.  Most everyone who grew up watching ATLA was pissed off about how Korra was reduced to a love triangle.  Everyone hated how the season was hastily wrapped up.  Everyone hated the fact that the show had so much potential but was ultimately ignored.  So what did everyone do?

They claimed that they weren’t going to watch season 2.

Now some people caved and watched, and others kept true to their word.  Season 2 was much better, but still focused on shitty romances.  Korra lost viewers because everyone was dissatisfied with how the show was going.  And that is sad, because season 3 is SO GOOD.

Regardless.  People stopped watching.

DO YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENS TO SHOWS THAT DON’T HAVE GOOD RATINGS??????

THEY ARE TAKEN OFF THE AIR.

Nickelodeon is not to blame.  If anything, blame the viewers.  Bryke fucked up.  They could have turned this show into a wonderful gem, and it is becoming one, but putting their viewers through 2 seasons of shit cost them.

It is unfortunate that they are booting the show with wonderful handicapped characters, but it is not problematic at all when the reason for pulling the show is for shitty ratings.  So shut the fuck up.

*Sighs* Of course I don’t think that’s the reason they pulled it off air. Though anything is possible, so I wouldn’t discount it. Nickelodeon have lost their best chance of good representation for handicapped people for the time being, though. And whether that was their intention or not, the implications of it-and removing their only dark-skinned female protagonist from their TV network, might I add-are indeed problematic.

And yes, Nickelodeon ARE to blame for the ratings tanking like they have. Please, do your research.

Korra’s writing issues are not the main reason it was pulled, Nickelodeon fucked up. Their advertising department fucked up. MUNDONICK fucked up. The ratings wouldn’t be HALF as bad if they’d advertised the show properly and kept an eye on how their content was being distributed.

I’d argue my case further, but I’m busy right now. For now, that is all.

I’m not quite sure what that article is supposed to show me, as it was written before Korra aired. And of course it is unfortunate to have to take representation off the air. I loved seeing a brown skinned main character (as I am a Latina myself). Regardless, a show that is LOSING MONEY for Nickelodeon isn’t going to be kept on the air. Nick is primarily a business. What do you expect them to do?

As for advertising: Korra was ALL OVER THE PLACE when it was announced. It was so goddamn popular. You could NOT get away from it. That was the next big thing. But when a show begins to fail, they cut ads because that COSTS MORE MONEY.

A business is not about to waste money. Clearly they are making money on Spongebob (it’s still insanely popular no matter how cringeworthy it is), so clearly that’s the advertising priority. That’s how businesses operate. They’re not going to waste their resources on a show that they cannot save.

Oh, it shows PLENTY if you ask me. It’s pretty obvious that Nickelodeon did not want Korra on the air to begin with, and what Nickelodeon have been doing is a surprisingly common tactic to get shows that the higher ups don’t think will sell off the air. I’ve been keeping tabs on this for a while, and it just all seems a little TOO convenient to me.

When Korra was ANNOUNCED, yes, it was huge. It brought in a lot of viewers back then. But the ratings’ decline can be linked STRAIGHT back to it’s advertising getting poorer and poorer over time. Despite what you might think of The Legend of Korra, it has a HUGE fanbase and there have been several replies to this post stating that some of the more casual fans just “Didn’t know when it was on”. Now, imagine how the offline world must be doing with so little information to go on.

Despite this being “how business operates”, that’s no excuse for the treatment Korra has been getting down the line in comparison to other shows. Using the excuse “this is how business operates” doesn’t change that, no matter how true to life it might be. I know how this business works, I’m studying this quite extensively in fact, that doesn’t make it right though.

Ok but a huge fanbase on Tumblr literally means nothing. Tumblr is just one small demographic compared to the millions who watch Nickelodeon. Unless you provide me with numbers proving me wrong, you cannot insist that Nick pulled LOK because it had a female, WOC lead or because it had handicapped characters. Ratings. Are. Bad. Because. Writing. Was. Bad. Taking a show off of the air because of bad ratings is not evil. It happens every day. Joey was taken off of the air due to shitty ratings, yet I have survived without Matt LeBlanc (though Episodes does help).

And I’m pretty sure that youth these days know how to use the computer. When I was young, I was on Nick every goddamn day (I was always posting on the message boards n stuff), and I’m sure that can be said for kids today, as well. Nick posts information about Korra, and I’m pretty sure they were privy to the information when it came out. Tumblr is not Nick’s only social media outlet.

MAKE NICKELODEON FIND THE THING!!!

This is pisses me off

Spongebob has tenure, and is easy to market for. It’s less marketing for the show, and more marketing for the franchise.

LoK unfortunately had a very weak second season that greatly diminished its viewerbase. As good as the third season is, the mar that was the second season has already done its damage.

Plus most of your reasonings outside of ‘solid character arcs’ don’t really present why the show is good outside of your own personal bias for those attributes.

The current show is good, but the writers made their own bed and will have to sleep in it. At the least it is getting its conclusion produced still, so it’s not like they’re just ending the show abruptly, like other shows that were actually solid all the way through and just never got the fanbase to begin with.
